Situational Writing

What Students Need to Know

A practical guide to approaching SW clearly and efficiently.

Situational Writing is not meant to be fancy writing. It is task fulfilment, purpose, format and clear communication.

Parent Note

For SW, the most common problem is spending too long on it and having less time for Continuous Writing. Remind your child that SW should take around 15 to 20 minutes. The goal is to answer the task correctly and clearly, not to write beautifully.

Timing

Situational Writing should usually take around 15 to 20 minutes. Spending too long here can affect Continuous Writing time.

Main purpose

Students must know why they are writing. The main purpose controls the tone and content.

Content points

Before writing, identify about six content points including the main purpose. This helps prevent missing key information.

Format awareness

  • Email.
  • Letter.
  • Report.
  • Article or notice style where appropriate.
