Composition Planning

A Practical Planning System for P6

A quick planning system for exam conditions.

Students should not skip planning. A short plan can prevent a weak plot and reduce panic during writing.

Parent Note

Encourage your child to practise planning before every composition attempt, even at home. Five minutes of planning saves writing time and produces a clearer story. Ask your child to show you the plan before they write — it is a quick check that takes almost no time.

The 5-minute plan

  • Read the theme carefully.
  • Study all three pictures.
  • Choose the picture that creates the strongest conflict or turning point.
  • Decide the main problem.
  • Decide the ending and lesson before writing.

Plan the story chain

Use this chain: character → situation → problem → action → turning point → outcome.

Proofreading reserve

Students should leave time to check tense, punctuation, paragraphing, run-ons and repeated errors.
