Spot Spelling and Grammar Errors Carefully

A page on how to correct the underlined word without changing more than needed.

Editing is not random correction. Students must first decide whether the error is spelling or grammar.

Parent Note

When reviewing Editing answers with your child, ask them to tell you whether each error was Spelling or Grammar before they reveal the correction. This habit of labelling first builds the exact skill that separates careful editors from guessers.

Read the full passage first

Understand the context before correcting the underlined words. Meaning can affect the correction.

Identify Sp or G first

Every underlined word is either a spelling error or a grammar error. Label it before writing the correction.

Spelling method

  • Sound it out.
  • Check the root word.
  • Check vowels, double consonants and suffixes.
  • Watch phonetic spelling traps.

Grammar method

  • Bracket the working clause [ ].
  • Circle the clue ( ).
  • Ask what word form the sentence needs.
  • Check tense consistency and context meaning.

Never change more than the underlined word

Write only the corrected word in the box. One word in, one word out.

Student reminder

Student Note

“Do not correct blindly. Decide Sp or G first.”

“One word. Correct form. Correct spelling.”
